GPO Witness History is a brand new immersive exhibition opening in March 2016 in the iconic GPO building in the heart of Dublin’s City Centre

Dublin’s GPO is indelibly associated with the 1916 Rising and the events that led to the creation of an independent Irish state. The stern grandeur of its facade, Irish flag flying proudly aloft, is an image that evokes a justifiable sense of heroism and nationhood. In the course of its long history, the GPO has witnessed much more than the events of Easter Week, and we now invite you to dive into that history and discover the many tales it has to tell.

An Post’s GPO Witness History’s special effects, soundscapes and heartfelt stories of real people in extraordinary circumstances will captivate all age groups,  from the curious, young international visitor to the well- informed history buff – there’s plenty to interest and engage individuals, families and touring groups.

A place of business and public service, of remembrance, protest and pageantry, the GPO deserves the unique place it holds in the affections of Irish people everywhere.

Dublin’s GPO has always been the headquarters of the Post Office in Ireland but it has not always been located in O’Connell Street. The first recorded Post Office in Dublin was located near Dublin Castle, where the Government was, but as the postal service grew the main office in Dublin moved premises a number of times ending up for several years in College Green, opposite the Bank of Ireland. That building became too small and the Post Office decided to build a new GPO in Sackville Street, which was the old name for O’Connell Street.
