Kylemore-Abbey-online-listing2

Kylemore Abbey is located in one of Ireland’s most unique landscapes – Connemara. Described by Oscar Wilde as “a savage beauty”, it is a region of awe-inspiring, unspoilt and natural beauty.

Its patchwork of lakes, rugged mountains, and windswept bogs certainly gives a sense of splendid isolation. The raw beauty, sweeping vistas and constantly changing moods of the Connemara landscape have captured the hearts and minds of generations of artists, writers and musicians.

Indeed, it is this beauty which first attracted Mitchell and Margaret Henry to choose Connemara as the location for their honeymoon in the 1850s. Spellbound by the beauty of Connemara, Margaret Henry fell in love with Connemara and particularly the area known as ‘Kylemore’.

The time Mitchell and Margaret spent together made a lasting impression on their hearts. Years later when Mitchell inherited a fortune from his father, he returned to Kylemore, purchased 15,000 acres and built the magnificent fairy-tale castle as a romantic gift for his wife Margaret.

Today, Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Garden is the most visited attraction in the west of Ireland.

Thousands of people come to visit Kylemore every year to see the magnificent fairy tale castle and Abbey. They also come to experience not only the natural beauty of the Kylemore but to experience the aura of peace and tranquillity and a sense of spirituality.

The Benedictine Nuns remain in residence at Kylemore and as Directors of the Kylemore Trust, they are very much part of the fabric of today’s Kylemore, indeed its spiritual heart.

They continue with their daily life of works and prayer according to the ancient Rule of St. Benedict. They run their farm on the estate, make handcrafted products and offer a space for monastic hospitality, learning experiences and music education.

Visitors are welcome to experience restored rooms of the Abbey, Gothic Church, Woodland and Lakeshore Walks, Nature and Tree Trails, Children’s Play Trail, 6 acre Victorian Walled Garden. The restaurant and tea house at Kylemore offers traditional homemade food and the Craft & Design Shop has a collection of the best Irish crafts and gifts.

Visit Kylemore Abbey and discover what makes Kylemore special.
